HDTV
I thought I was going to wait until July, but I broke down and joined the HD Era ahead of schedule. This morning I pulled the trigger and ordered a Samsung LN-S4695D (46″ 1080p LCD).
I was tossing around between the Sharp Aquos LC46D62U and the Sony KDL-46XBR2. From what I read, the Sharp models have a serious banding issue and the Sony models have clouding issues and the price includes the Sony tax.
Samsung has a newer model (LNS4696D) but as far as I can tell the only differences on the new model are USB 1.1, Firewire, and a cable card slot. Nothing I would miss, or pay an extra $400 for.
Now what the hell am I going to do with a 46″ set in a 600-square-foot apartment???

That is the question. I got a 26″ model, even though it’s 720 rather than 1080 (though at that size, who can tell?), because even at that size, it looms over me a little more than I’m comfortable with. I’m trying to imagine these living rooms where a 50″ television would actually looked like it belonged.

I didn’t realize how big it was (44 1/2″ wide), so I am probably going to “downgrade” to a 40″ set, which is still large, but sitting 8 feet away it’s near optimal at 720p and damn good looking at 1080p.
I should have whipped out the measuring tape before ordering but if I don’t act spontaneously with large purchases, I’ll never pull the trigger.

I decided to stick with my gut and keep the 46″. It’s HUGE compared to my current set and the 40″ but I need something to watch NASCAR on (that was a joke).

So if you watch Discovery HD Theater’s Sunrise Earth every morning at 7:00, it’ll be like having another window in your apartment for that hour.
